Simulator Evaluation

• For interviews in Portland the sim is a Frasca configured as a twin.
• Sim in Burbank is B1900 or Chieftain
• Approach plates and enroute charts are handed out during a briefing of what the simulator evaluation will cover. No suprises.
• Approaches vary by Interview Location.
• Most of the time they are from the local area.
• You might get a Departure procedure.
• Be able to fly a full procedure ILS in non-radar environment.
• Other scenarios: Non-Precision Approach, Missed Approach, Engine Failure on Missed.
• In the end, they are looking for a good scan and situational awareness

Burbank sim

Clearance: (from SMO) "Cleared to Burbank, fly runway heading to 900ft, direct LAX VOR, then out 316 radial to SILEX, climb maintain 4000." Flew the route to the ILS 8 to Burbank went missed got an amendment to the missed procedure to take us to CONAG then the VOR 8 Burbank
Climb rwy heading to 900 ft, then climbing right turn to 270 degrees, Intercept the 316 radial off of LAX VOR to Silex intersection. Complete the course reversal at Silex intersection, shoot the approach, go missed approach. Fly the published missed to VNY VOR, then to Silex and hold.

Portland sim

Randomly chosen area in the Pacific northwest where you can take off, fly a departure procedure, and either return to that airport for an approach or fly an approach at a neighboring airport. One example is Yakima, Washington. Fly the Gromo2 departure, then given vectors for a VOR/DME approach. That ended in a missed approach and a holding pattern. After the hold, shoot the ILS approach back into Yakima using the DME arc.

• What 3 things must you report when you enter a hold?
• If not told which direction to turn in a hold clearance, which direction do you turn?
• What is the max variation on a Dual airborne VOR check? How often must it been done?

Comments

• There is a great deal of weight placed on the simulator evaluation. Make sure you are current and comfortable flying single pilot IFR.
• Be straightforward and honest!
• Make sure you logbook is current and your flight times match your application.
• Be sure to bring all items they request.
• Be instrument current or get current.
• Do some preparation for the Simulator evaluation.
• Plan on being there for 2-2.5 hours
